Sydney to Louisbourg
The Fortress of Louisbourg is 32 km southeast of the Sydney cruise pavilion, on the Atlantic coast of Cape Breton. There is no scheduled bus; the options are a tour, a taxi, or a rental car.
- The reconstructed town is a further shuttle ride from the visitor centre, and the site itself is large and open to the weather. Two to three hours on the ground is realistic, not one.
- The fortress operates a shortened season and reduced interpretation outside the summer months, which is when many Canada and New England sailings call.
- No scheduled public transport covers this route, so an independent visit means committing to a taxi fare each way or a rental.
Most ships also sell a coach excursion to Louisbourg. However you travel, being back aboard before all-aboard is your own arrangement to make — we publish the journey, not your sailing. Your guide plays either way, and it is yours to keep.
The road is straightforward but no bus covers it, so a booked car that does not appear leaves no alternative. Worth confirming the return before you leave the pier, especially on a short call or late in the season.
- 40–55 min Sydney cruise pavilion to the Fortress of Louisbourg visitor centre, by road via Route 22.
0.7–0.9 hours each way
Plan your return against your ship's all-aboard time, which is on your daily programme. It is earlier than the departure time, and if you are coming back by tender the last tender leaves earlier still.
