Getting there, and getting back

Kusadasi to Aphrodisias

Aphrodisias is 131 km inland from Kusadasi, through Aydin and up the Dandalas valley. There is no rail link and no scheduled service that works for a ship day.

  • Dolmus services run Aydin to Karacasu and then Karacasu to Geyre, but the connection is infrequent and the last return is early in the afternoon. It is not a schedule to hold a ship departure against.
  • The site needs a good two hours on foot; the stadium alone sits at the far end of it.

Most ships also sell a coach excursion to Aphrodisias. However you travel, being back aboard before all-aboard is your own arrangement to make — we publish the journey, not your sailing. Your guide plays either way, and it is yours to keep.

This one we will call: take the ship's excursion. Four to five and a half hours of driving on a road with no scheduled service behind it. A private car that breaks down on the Karacasu road is entirely your problem, and the sailing time is not ours to hold. Your guide plays on the coach.

  1. 120–165 min Kusadasi cruise port to Geyre (Aphrodisias) by road, via Aydin and Karacasu. One leg, no practical public alternative.

2.0–2.8 hours each way

Plan your return against your ship's all-aboard time, which is on your daily programme. It is earlier than the departure time, and if you are coming back by tender the last tender leaves earlier still.

Kusadasi to Ephesus

Ephesus is about 20 km inland. A taxi from the pier is the simple option; the dolmuş via Selçuk is cheaper and slower.

  • Agree the taxi fare, and the wait-and-return arrangement, before you get in. The site is a one-way walk downhill between two gates that are 3 km apart, so being collected at the wrong one is the common mistake.

Most ships also sell a coach excursion to Ephesus. However you travel, being back aboard before all-aboard is your own arrangement to make — we publish the journey, not your sailing. Your guide plays either way, and it is yours to keep.

  1. 20–60 min Yellow taxi direct from the port gate, roughly 20 to 30 minutes. The cheaper alternative is a dolmuş (shared minibus) to Selçuk, then a second short dolmuş or taxi to the site — reckon 45 to 60 minutes door to door that way.
  2. 5–10 min Ephesus has two gates, upper and lower, about 3 km apart. Most independent visitors are dropped at the lower gate and walk up.

0.4–1.2 hours each way

Kusadasi to Hierapolis

Pamukkale is 165 km inland from Kusadasi, near Denizli. It is the longest excursion commonly sold from this port and the one with the least slack in the day.

  • Five to six and a half hours of driving for the round trip, before you have walked anything. The travertines and Hierapolis above them need two hours at minimum.
  • The terraces are walked barefoot on wet stone, which is slower going than the distance suggests.
  • Trains run Izmir to Denizli but not from Kusadasi, and the timings do not fit a ship day.

Most ships also sell a coach excursion to Hierapolis and Pamukkale. However you travel, being back aboard before all-aboard is your own arrangement to make — we publish the journey, not your sailing. Your guide plays either way, and it is yours to keep.

This one we will call: take the ship's excursion. Five to six and a half hours of driving for the round trip, no scheduled service from Kusadasi to fall back on, and most of a port day gone before you have walked anything. Your guide plays on the coach.

  1. 150–195 min Kusadasi cruise port to the Pamukkale travertines, via Aydin and the Buyuk Menderes valley.

2.5–3.2 hours each way

Plan your return against your ship's all-aboard time, which is on your daily programme. It is earlier than the departure time, and if you are coming back by tender the last tender leaves earlier still.

Journey times are typical, not guaranteed, and nothing here is a schedule. Your ship's all-aboard time is the only one that counts, it is not the same as the departure time, and it is not something we can look up for you — it varies by line and by port and it is printed on your daily programme. If a connection slips, turn around.
